Sugar art is the delightful and often decadent art of creating something beautiful out of sugar, or really a variety of sweet and tasty ingredients.
It is something that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, including young children and doesn't require an extensive amount of supplies or materials.
Sugar art can include tiered wedding cakes, elaborate cast and pulled sugar sculptures, chocolate showpieces as well as more simple pies, cookies,
desserts and garnishes. Like all other art forms it is really in the eye of the beholder to decide whether a piece is art or just a yummy snack.
Confectionery arts and baking and pastry arts are often terms used interchangeably with sugar art. The idea of edible art is nothing new,
but in recent years it has experienced a fun growth in popularity, due in large part to television shows focused on a variety of forms of sugar art.
Shows featuring interesting characters (bakers and chefs) creating huge and elaborate masterpieces are fun to watch and also ignite an interest in
creating your own smaller scale masterpieces. This boom of popularity for sugar art has also educated people about all the cake and pastry options
that are available and has made fondant and gum paste use much more widespread in the United States. There are also constantly new bakeries, cupcake shops,
books and blogs being built and published to share the art of sugar with anyone willing to taste it or read about it.
