When shopping, do you find that you gravitate towards sprinkles and immediately add them to your cart? You are not alone…sprinkles can be an addiction!

Sprinkles are a classic way to add a pop of color and a bit of sweetness to any treat. Whether you are making cakes, cupcakes, cookies, or chocolate-dipped treats, sprinkles can take your creations to the next level. But with so many kinds of sprinkles out there, how do you know which ones to choose? In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about sprinkles, including their different types, how to store them, and how to use them in baking.

Types of Sprinkles

Jimmies

Jimmies are indisputably the father of sprinkles. These rods come in a variety of lengths, colors, and textures. Today, jimmies are available in dozens of individual colors, fun mixes, and metallic and shimmery sheens. Their waxy coating prevents colors from bleeding, making them a popular choice for sugar cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and ice cream sprinkles. Throw some into your cake batter for a quick confetti cake (funfetti cake). These are the classic birthday cake sprinkle.

Nonpareils

Named for their “non peril” meaning “without equal”, these versatile tiny balls come in a range of colors and finishes (metallic and shimmer). We like to use these dainty sprinkles on smaller projects like cake pops, spritz cookies, and dipped pretzels when a little color on a small treat has a big impact. Unlike jimmies, colored nonpareils can bleed and leech their color. Due to this, they aren't the best choice for adding to wet applications, like cake batter and soft cookie dough.

Sanding Sugar

Sanding sugar, also known as decorating sugar, comes in a variety of colors. Sanding sugar is slightly coarser than traditional granulated sugar and has more sparkle. It has a light crunchy texture and is perfect for decorating cakes, cupcakes, frosted sugar cookies, and other baked goods.

Coarse Sugar

Also known as sugar crystals, these large-grained sugar pieces add a beautiful sparkle to your baked goods. They come in a variety of colors, and some even have a pearl finish to add shimmer and glamour to your treats.

Shaped Sprinkles

You'll find two types of shaped sprinkles, quins (also known as edible sequins and confetti) and candy sprinkles. Quins are flat, simple cut-out shapes that add color and a touch of crunch. Quins are made from colored sugar dough and their colors do not bleed. Shaped candy sprinkles are thicker pieces with impressive fine, embossed details. Candy sprinkles have a hard crunch like Runts and Sweet Tarts. Since their outside shells are dyed, their colors can bleed when wet.

Shaped sprinkles tell a story. Cactus, Pinata, and Margarita sprinkles hint that a fiesta is about to happen. Pineapple sprinkles mixed with pinks and greens imply a tropical luau. Christmas trees and candy cane-shaped sprinkles let us know the holidays have arrived. With hundreds of options, you'll find a shaped sprinkle for every occasion.

Sugar Pearls

Sugar pearls are round balls of sugar that come in a variety of colors and sizes. They add a beautiful and classy touch to wedding cakes and edible favors. Some sugar pearls can be hard, so we suggest using them sparingly.

Edible Glitter

Edible glitter is a fun and sparkly way to add pizzazz to your baked goods. This edible shimmer comes in an array of colors, from classic gold and silver to bright pinks, purples, and blues. Edible glitter also comes in larger flakes and shapes like stars and squares. Edible glitter is perfect for adding a glamorous finish to cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and chocolate-dipped treats.

Creating a sprinkle mix can be as fun as decorating the final project. Not feeling creative? Hundreds of sprinkles mixes are already created to either spark inspiration or simply use them as is! Metallic Dragees

Onto the most controversial sprinkle of them all! Metallic dragees! Metallic dragees, pronounced "drah-jays", are hard sugar pieces coated in a non-edible metallic finish. These are the sprinkles with the most brilliant shine. Unfortunately, these beautiful sprinkles are non-edible. In fact, they are not even allowed to be sold or shipped to California!

Our most common question is, "why even carry 'em if we can't eat 'em?". These dragees are simply gorgeous on decorative pieces that will be removed before serving or items not eaten. For example, we use dragees on gingerbread houses, in the center of gum paste flowers, and on display cakes. Do you have a customer who really wants the metallic design on a tiered cake? We recommend the tier embellished with dragees to be a styrofoam dummy underneath, while the other tiers are real. This way the customer gets the desired look without having to remove all the tiny dragees or risking guests eating the metallic dragees.

Sprinkle Q&A

How Do You Use Sprinkles?

The best way to use sprinkles in baking is to sprinkle them on top of the finished product whether cakes, cookies, doughnuts, or brownies. Use them to embellish chocolate-dipped treats like pretzels, Rice Krispie treats, Oreos, hot cocoa bombs, truffles, cake pops, and more. You can mix jimmies and quins into cake batters and cookie dough for a funfetti look. Roll cookie dough into Christmas-colored sanding sugar, jimmies, and nonpareils for a festive look. Top your ice cream with rainbow sprinkles or chocolate jimmies. Add a special touch to your drinks by garnishing the rim of your glass with edible glitter or sanding sugar. The possibilities are endless.

How Do You Store Sprinkles?

When storing sprinkles, it is important to keep them in a cool, dark, and dry place. Why? Light can cause sprinkles to fade over time, especially purple and pink colors. Moisture can cause clumping and color bleeding. Also, heat can cause melting, color bleeding, and rancidity (this only applies to jimmies and quins due to their oil content). Plastic or glass containers with tight-fitting lids in a pantry or cabinet make great storage solutions.

What is the Shelf Life of Sprinkles?

Since most sprinkles have very high sugar content, they have very long shelf lives if properly stored. According to the website Eat By Date, if stored properly, sprinkles are good three to five years past their best buy dates. Please note, due to oil content, improper storage can reduce the shelf-life of jimmies and quins. Use your senses to decide whether your older sprinkles are good or bad. Do they look, smell, or taste off? Throw them out.
