Instructions
Prepare royal icing: Make a batch of royal icing according to your favorite recipe or using a store-bought mix. Divide the icing into bowls and tint each portion with food coloring to achieve desired colors (orange for pumpkins, black for bats and skulls, etc.).
Outline cookies: Fill a tipless piping bag with your desired color of royal icing. Outline the shapes of the cookies with the icing, following the edges of the cookie cutter shapes. Allow the outlines to set for a few minutes before moving on to the next step.
Flood cookies: Thin the remaining royal icing with a few drops of water until it reaches a slightly runny consistency. Fill in the outlines with the thinned icing, using a scribe to spread it evenly if needed. Let the flooded icing set for a few minutes.
Wet-on Wet Technique: While the flood base is still wet, pipe designs such as polka dots or facial features. This allows the icing to seamlessly blend together.
Dimensional Technique: Outline each section. Flood each section individually, allowing it to crust over before flooding the adjoining section. This helps prevent colors from bleeding into each other and maintains the distinctiveness of each section.
Add details: Once the base layer of icing has set, use piping bags with small round tips to add details to your cookies. For example, you can pipe faces onto the ghosts, eyes and mouths onto the pumpkins, intricate designs onto the skulls, and wings onto the bats. Use a scribe tool to help spread and shape the icing as needed.
Let dry: Allow the decorated cookies to dry completely at room temperature for several hours or overnight. Royal icing hardens as it dries, creating a smooth and glossy finish.
Optional: If desired, you can further decorate your cookies with edible glitter, sprinkles, or other decorations once the icing has set.
Serve and enjoy: Once the icing is completely dry, your Halloween Cutie Cutter Cookies are ready to be enjoyed! Serve them at Halloween parties or package them up as cute treats for friends and family.
Decorating cookies with royal icing can be a bit time-consuming, but the end result is definitely worth it! Have fun getting creative with your designs and enjoy the spooky sweetness of your Halloween cookies.
